Explanation about WIN95.SK

Discovery of new SUPER virus that cross infects DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Help files. Today we are seeing a growth in the development of viruses specifically for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. These advanced Operating Systems offer everyone more access to computers and greater more powerful applications to assist people with their daily projects. These easy to use Operating Systems also offer great flexibility for development and more possibilities for potentially dangerous or malicious applications to exist, unknown to the average user.

"With the discovery of Win95.SK by virus researchers at Kaspersky Lab we are seeing the first virus that cross infects DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Help System files. The virus authors are concentrating on developing more sophisticated viruses that can survive, and cross infect more Operating Systems." Said Keith Peer, President of Central Command.

This virus incorporates many features that are not unique in themselves but are unique in that, they are all contained in this virus and combined to make a "super" virus with many characteristics.

Win95.SK is a parasitic, polymorphic Windows virus that operates under Windows 95 and Windows 98 and directly infects Windows Portable Executable (PE) applications. It also, modifies Windows Help system files and drops a copy of the virus and automatically executes it when they are used. This virus can also add itself to popular archives found on the Internet ZIP, ARJ, RAR and HA. The droppers that are added to the Windows Help system files and archives have the internal structure of a standard DOS COM program. If these DOS virus droppers are executed under the Windows Operating System they can install a resident virus copy that operates in real time in the background, hidden from the user and directly infects Windows PE applications.

This virus also, has destructive capabilities and will erase the contents of all drives if one of several antivirus applications are found.
