Tips for Net Surfers 3
Pay Safely
Paying safely over the internet is something to
take care off. It's possible, but you have to pay attention. When in the address the http
is followed by a "s" (https://), means that the server is secured. When the
"s" isn't there, then never pay with your creditcard.
Correct Spelling

A lot of people choose to install an English version of Netscape. Almost all information
on the web is in English and so will also be some of your mail. To prevent mistakes in
replies to emails, you can use a build in spellchecker. The mail will be searched for
typo's and it will point to all unknown words.
World Wide Dictionary
Everyone has a dictionary at home. But you
can't match the collection of the Bucknell University. Via http://www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/rbeard/diction.html
you have access to more then 600 dictionaries in more then 150 languages. Except for the
most common languages, you will find languages from Maori to Ojibwe and - yes - even
Klingon.
More Space

The recent browsers of both Microsoft and Netscape come with all sorts of beautiful -
little used - options. These things cost monitor space, which you need for the primary
task of a browser: browsing/viewing sites. Luckily there is also an option to solve this.
In IE, you will find many options in the menu. To make space simply go to View , Toolbars,
Text labels and put off this option. Now you will only see small icons. Another nice
option under View is Full Screen.
Netscape As Calculator
Netscape has many hidden secrets. Even a real calculator. Type
this for example in the line for Location and Netscape will calculate it and give you the
answer in the browser screen: JavaScript:eval(1+2) and press Enter. You can add(+),
subtract(-), multiply(*) and divide(/).
Page Walking

To maneuver easily and quickly between different web pages, you can instead of the back
and forward button also use the key combination Alt + Arrow left
and Alt + Arrow right. This option also
works in sites that have frames.
Unwanted Dial Up
Some people wonder why
sometimes their computer dials up to their ISP when they start up their computer. Well
this can happen when IE wasn't closed properly in the last Windows session, before Windows
itself was closed. This will cause IE to automatically start up, next time you start up
your computer. This will happen only when in the menu Start, Settings, Configuration
screen, Internet, Connection it says that the Dial Up is on Auto. The solution is simple,
just make sure you always close the IE before you close Windows.
New Search Engines
Also on the territory of search engines research is being done. The purpose of this is:
faster and complete search engines. A very fast searching newcomer is Fast Search, http://www.alltheweb.com (80 million documents
inside). This summer that will be 200 million.
The second one listens to the name Google, http://www.google.com
, At this moment it's in a test phase. Google set a goal to find the most relevant
answers. Most search engines at this moment have between the relevant answers a lot of
crap.
Destiny Unknown
When you want to download a file. In most cases you will see a screen then that will ask
you what to do with the file. This means that Windows doesn't know with what program to
open the file. You will see 2 options here, the first is to safe the file to the HD or
second to open the file from the current location. Be careful with the check box warn
before opening files of this type. If you shut it off, all files of that type will always
be opened or saved. Trust me, you don't want this.
