Tips for Net Surfers 2

Collected Wisdom netscape.gif (1179 bytes)
When you have problems with a Netscape Product for which you need a solution fast, then go to Netscape's Knowledge-Base. Here you will find the questions and answers on almost all products of Netscape. The Knowledge-Base you can find at http://help.netscape.com/browse/. To search directly for a certain term in the Knowledge-Base then http://help.netscape.com/search.html is a good place to start.

No Way Back?   netscape.gif (1179 bytes) ie.gif (1126 bytes)
During it happens regularly that the BACK-button doesn't work. This mostly is the fault of the browser, but the result of a special piece of code on the page. This code sees to it that the selected link is opened in a new screen. On this moment you have 2 browser screens open, of which only the oldest keeps which pages where visited earlier. So when you are finished with the page close the newest screen and continue with the old one.

The Past netscape.gif (1179 bytes) ie.gif (1126 bytes)
As well Netscape as IE keeps track of which sites were visited. This could come in handy when you want to find a site again after a while, but forgot the URL. For IE you can find them in your History map in the Windows directory. IE will
keep visited sites in the History for 20 days. For Netscape versions under 4.0 open in the menu Window, then History. For versions 4.0 and higher click on the option Communicator, then History, this will open a list. Standard Netscape will keep visited sites in the History for 9 days, but you can easily change that.

Memory Support netscape.gif (1179 bytes)
The more the Net is used for business transactions, also the number of sites that are password protected grows. To have to provide your user name and password is becoming draggy. And the more sites ask for a log-in, the harder it becomes to remember the right user name and password. Luckily there's a solution for it. It's possible to make a bookmark for it, in the shape of: http://user:password@www.site.nl If there's asked for this bookmark, then Netscape provides automatically the correct user name and password. The disadvantage of it is that all who get there hands on the bookmark file know the password. Therefore it's also possible to fill out just the user name. Then only a screen will popup where you have to fill out the password. The bookmark for this has this form: http://user@www.site.nl

Corrupt Attachments netscape.gif (1179 bytes)
The sending of files with emails is almost always going well. Sometimes a file gets corrupted when it's send. A possible solution might be to change the format in which it is send. Before you press the send button, choose the tab: Message, Sendoptions. Here you can select Uucoding instead of MIME for attachments. Standard MIME-coding is used; Uucoding is an older way to send files. And because Uucoding works completely different then MIME, could this be the way that the file is send without problems.

Extra Screens netscape.gif (1179 bytes) ie.gif (1126 bytes)
Normally you click with the left mouse button on a link to go to this page, in which case you would automatically lose the previous page. This is annoying especially with a slow connection. To open a link in it's own screen, you can press the Shift-button while clicking on the URL. Now it's very simple to switch with Alt-Tab between 2 browser windows. In this way you could open as many screens as you like. This method also works to avoid frames. In most cases a new page will be opened in a relatively small part of the screen. These pages you can open with the Shift-button to see them on a full screen.

Color Preferences netscape.gif (1179 bytes)
Most Web Sites get the colors for background, links, etc, which the author of the pages added to them. For the rest of the page Netscape uses standard colors. For old versions of Netscape you can adjust them via Options, General Preferences, Colors. For Netscape version 4.0 and up you can adjust them via Edit, Preferences, Appearance, Colors. In most versions you will find a button in front of "always use my colors, overriding document. If you choose this option the authors settings will be ignored. By using your own settings could destroy the effect and the appearance of the page though.

Read Later netscape.gif (1179 bytes)
The reading of newsgroups can be very expensive if you do it online. The solution is that the Netscape versions 4.0 and higher have an offline modus. When you're on-line, you chose from the menu File, the option Offline. A screen will appear where you can check the option Newsgroups. When you click OK, you will get a screen in which you can select which Newsgroups have to be downloaded. Select them and click OK. The mails from the selected groups will be copied to the harddisk of your PC, so that you can read them later. When all messages are downloaded, you can disconnect.
