Tips for Net Surfers 1
Of Great Importance
Usually all messages appear the
same in the mailbox of the recepient, so he sees your message together with all other
messages. With Netscape you can, besides the tab for receivers and attachments, select
extra options. One of the options is priority. When you choose for example highest, this
will be added as info to the message. This will make many mailprograms add a mark to the
message, to show that it has a higher priority.
Mail Me Later
Sometimes it will or can happen that you are
working on an email, but you can't finish it for some reason. The end of that mail will be
something like: "Oops, I'm late for something, got to go now, byeee"
In Outlook Express you can click on the X (top, right) to close the window. The program
will ask you if you want to save the message and give notice of that. You can finish the
mail later by opening the map concepts and to doubleclick on the message. You can now
finish the mail as if it's a new message.
Look Further
When your trying to find some
info with one of the searchengines, then it could be wise not to look at more then the
first 10 or 15 hits. If the right page isn't among them, the chance is very small that
it's between further hits. You can better try to find another string to look for. By
adding words to search on, will make the searchengine look on a smaller surface. The
reading of the help pages with the searchengines can enlighten.
Big Cleanup
To keep your computer at a good speed, it's wise to regularly
clean the Trash folder in Netscape messenger. Go to File and then choose the option to
Empty the recycle bin. With this not only the recycle bin will be emptied, but also all
maps will be compressed. This will increase the speed of Netscape messenger.
This can also be done with Outlook Express. To empty recycle bin, click with right mouse
button on Removed items in the menu on the left side. In the now visible men, you choose
the option empty map. To compress all maps, choose option File, Map and then Compress all
maps.
Hidden
In IE are in the menu View, Internet Options, under the tab
Advanced some handy options hidden. It wouldn't hurt to have a look at them. So you can
find under Toolbar two options that could come in handy for some people. If you wants as
much as you can on screen, then the option small icons a bit more room. Further more you
can by adding a Font button to the Toolbar, quickly choose a bigger Font, when a site is
not readable with your resolution.
A Safe Feeling
The Net is becoming more and more a place where you can buy
stuff. To guarantee a safe way of paying, the pages where you have to fill out important
information will be locked with a key. Netscape as well as IE show this by showing a lock.
In Netscape you can click on this lock, to provide you information on the kind of
security. In IE this doesn't always work. For some sites where Netscape can provide you a
certificate, IE can't. On this certificate information is available of the owner, this always has to be the same as the site that
your visiting!
Cache Size
To increase the surfspeed, both Netscape and IE are setup to
use the so called Cache. Here all documents will be saved, so that you can see them faster
next time when you want to see them. The option Cache in Netscape can be found under Edit,
Preferences, Advanced, Cache. The diskcache is standard about 7 MB.
Under IE you have to look in the menu View, Internet options, Common, Temporary internet
files. Standard it is set to 3 percent of your harddisk, so with new PC's this can be like
over 10 MB or more.
Direct Email
When your surfing and you want to send someone an email, you
can do this simply by choosing File, New, Message. In both Netscape and IE, you will get a
screen in which you can write your new message. In Netscape Navigator you can do it even
faster by pressing Ctrl + M.
Back to the basics

If you work with IE 4, it's very simple
to go fast to the root of your harddisk. Only to type \ is enough to get the file list in
the present window. In this way is it easy to to copy just received files to the right
destiny. It's also possible instead of just the slash to give a path. The combination \temp will open straight away your temporary directory on your harddisk.
